.

Hello everyone, my name is Sam, and I'm a year 3 HRM student. I like playing badminton and listening songs. It's a challenge for me to take this as I think I'm not a creative person. Anyway, I hope this blog would bring a lot of brainstorm to every readers about the innovation and creativity in the world.

Introduction of our group

The name of our group is called “Passing Out”. There are five members in our group : Ng Ka Chun,Yu Wai,Ngai Pok Keung,Chan Ye Ko and Pang Man Chung. All of us are studying human resources management. And "passing out" implies the uniformed group of students who have finished their training in a training school, equipped them with professional knowledge. With the professional knowledge, they can perform their tasks well in the future and make contribution to the society. Therefore, we hope we can learn something new, practical and be able to apply that knowledge in the real world after this course. Most importantly, we hope we can change ourselves from student to professional. "Passing out" can also be explained separately. "Passing" simply means we are able to pass this course. “Out” can be expressed in the way of outstanding. We hope we do not only pass this course but also be an outstanding one.

Introduce the blog we find
This is the funny blog we found (http://visualthinkmap.blogspot.com/), which is created by “Visual think map” who named the blog after themselves, introducing a wild range of ideas by using some pictures, diagrams. The viewers of this blog are of different demographics. In other words, the viewers of this blog can be anyone who is interested in visual. Therefore, the author creates this blog for sharing some concepts, ideas with the help visual elements. They try to use a creative way to present the new ideas and help to remember things. It is a leading method of memorizing things which is extremely creative and innovative.

Successes, Failure and suggestions in promoting creativity and innovation
In our opinion, the blog is quite successful in promoting creativity and innovation. It is not common to find some ideas or concepts which can be fully presented by applying some visual elements. Even we find that many books or notes provide some diagrams to help us understand their ideas, they are just auxiliary. it is the first time when people use pictures along to present certain ideas. The method and graphic shown in the blog can really help you understand ideas and relationships between different subjects, in order to remember and memorize them.

On the other hand, the blog we chose involves a huge range of topics, ranging from academic to entertainment, science to art. The whole blog is presented by diagram for multiple purposes. You would learn business frameworks, structure of brain, mathematical formulas and so forth. Also you would find something interesting like the change of logos of Pepsi and Coca cola, models of cars, etc. Usually, a blog is just for one purpose, but this one would fulfill viewers’ different needs. That is a reason why we chose this blog. We will not feel bored when we visit this blog.

To our understanding not all of the ideas can be clearly presented by pictures. Even Sometimes, it will become more complex if many pictures are used. Therefore, we suggest that the blog can provide some explanation with texts below the diagram. In this way, the viewers can have a better understanding of the ideas and concepts.

Moreover, some of the pictures and relationship diagrams are really so complicated that it sometimes really confuses viewers. So, it would be better if those diagrams and pictures are more focused on a more specific area within a discipline.

Revision / extension
Thank You! All of your kindly comments are very helpful. We will talk about the advantages that you mentioned.

First of all, many of you think that the visual presentation or mind map can help people memorize and understand ideas easier. Moreover, sometimes, some ideas are closely related and their relationships are complex. Instead if using boring texts only, using visual mind map can help differentiate them, then you will not mix them up again.

Apart from helping better memorize and understand ideas, another advantage of using mind map is that pictures are more interesting than solely use of boring texts. It is more attractive by reading some curious, fresh context picture than the dull texts. As a result, you should have a higher efficiency of learning, especially during your revisions before examinations.

However, you guys have suggested some obstacles in promoting creativity of our blog.

Sometimes, because you don’t have the specific knowledge in some aspects, or the relationships between entities are over complicated, so you don’t understand what the mind map is talking about as only pictures are shown to explain the ideas without any texts. So, it is suggested that the authors or creators should explain more, especially for some new or difficult aspects. But, in our opinion, for some aspects, say, about some medical problems or technology, if you are not experts of those aspects, will you really look at those materials? So, we think you would know what is going on in the pictures.

Moreover, you may doubt about that some pictures may not be able to be unified as each individual would have their own images and pictures of the same objects. So, it may make readers confused and it may not be proper to use visual map to present new ideas. However, we agree with 2411.Frontier that it would give some rooms for readers to imagine by themselves. As you know, you can still do further researches after read the visual mind map. So, we think it is not a big problem.

3430 Ocean thought it would be better to use some software that makes the mind map in your computer instead of drawing physically. It is a very helpful suggestion. And we agree that it would be more flexible and convenient. You can draw in your computer, and then, you can read it by your computer, or you can also print it out as handouts. The link that 3430 Ocean provided is that http://www.edrawsoft.com/freemind.php .

In conclusion, visual mind map would have its own advantages but also drawbacks. But, what we want to focus more on is that our group is not concerned about what aspects the blog shows. More importantly, we would like to suggest you to use visual mind map as a new presentation way that you can use in a formal presentation, or just make it for your exam revisions. Finally, again, thank you for all your helpful comments.

  1. I do agree that i like the blog since those mind maps are really eye-cathcing and interesting. In my opinion, using mind map to present ideas is great, one of my teachers has also used those mind-map to present difficult ideas to me and i find it is useful for me to understand those concepts.
However, some of the ideas are really difficult to understand even after i look at those mind map. Therefore, if the author can upload a video presentation to explain those mind maps, the viewers of the blog can understand the idea more easily.

  2. Thanks for sharing.

First of all, I do appreciate the name of your group. “passing out” obviously is meaning that a brave person graduated and become a police then start to contribute the society. As well as the creativity and innovation, they are also made to contribute the society and even the world.

Secondly, I agree with you that using diagram can further explain the complex concept. By this way, viewers can easily get the main ideas of the author. As we all know, creativity must be supported and created by a person who are familiar to the certain topic. In other words, If Edison don’t even understand the concept of electricity , how can he invent light? Thus, It is important that viewers hold a whole picture in their mind which can promote the creativity and innovation.

Thirdly, one of the topic that the blog release is “Web-line. From web 1.0 to web 2.0, web 3.0 and a head!”. It is quite interest. However, if people do not have such kind of computer’s knowledge, they can hardly understand the concept behind. Therefore, only provide two to three sentences to illustrate is totally not enough. As a result, it is a obstacle when promoting creativity and innovation.

  3. Using passing out as a group name is very creative. It is a positive word encourages you all to pursue the dream.

The blog about visual elements is very interesting. We often find reading text boring, instead, using mind map enhances the efficiency of learning according to the psychologists. It helps to convert some difficult concepts into a diagram. The diagram is then able to show different relationship or complex ideas in a more simple way.

Let’s think in this way, imagine you are revising for your exams, you are preoccupied with the different texts, notes, concepts in various subjects, our brain sucks easily. At this time, you have chances to take a look at these pictures, I am sure you will feel more relaxed and have energy to go on after the break.

Additionally, different people have different interpretations on the pictures, even the drawers and audiences. So the pictures can inspire you to think more, which enhance your creativity.

And finally, I do agree that sometimes diagrams can be too complex to understand just like the one your group shown. There may be a need for some illustration and further explanation with texts.

  4. I agree with the viewpoint of ‘passing out’ that it is difficult to understand others mind map without interpretation. Since they jotted down their ideas in mind map, it is non sensible for us to guess what their meaning behind.

If you want mind map to assist your memory, problem solving and decision making, I will suggest not drawing physical mind map. Why don’t we become more innovation in this digital generation? Some freeware of mind map are provided on the Internet, it is definitely more creativity and innovative. It is more convenient because the map is alterable and flexible. You can edit the whole diagram or text as you wish, not need to worry about the page size, changing the font color… Moreover, people save time for not really draw the symbols and lines by pens, it can benefit to someone who are not good at drawing. The above advantages encourage the first time of mind map users to try.

The blog is really interesting and helpful. As I am not good at memorizing,I will try to memorize things through visual elements after reading this blog.I agree that more non-verbal explaination should be put beside the diagrams,so that it will be clearer and it can ensure that readers can get your message. They may not get what you are presenting through some diagrams without any explaination in texts, especially for those which are complex.

When we use diagrams to present new ideas, explaination in texts becomes more important as no one knows your new ideas. You have to make sure that people are able to get your ideas and they won't get lost in your diagram.

As a student,I agree that visual elements are helpful.Just like thankful said,we can create our own mind maps for revision. It would save us a lot of time spending on revision and I do think that your interest in revising will be much higher than reading the boring textbooks! The efficiency for revision will also become higher and higher!

Again, thank you for the sharing:)And I will try to use visual elements to help me from now on.

  6. Your group chooses a meaningful and creative group name. I think all of the students want to pass in the exam and be an outstanding one in the world. It is our dream.

In the blog, the author would like to share the idea of using some interesting ways for people to remember the difficult things. Students need to remember a lot of information; they feel bored to do that. Therefore, this blog is good for them. We can know how to make simple information; it helps us easy to remember the complicated information.

I agree that this blog provide creativity and innovation. For the information, different people have different picture in their heart. I think no one can have the same picture even though they have the same idea. So, it is unique. It really provides creativity and innovation. Your group chooses a good blog.

However, not all the information can be shown as pictures or diagrams. Even though they can be shown as pictures, I think it is so complicated for people to understand. Therefore, if there is some complicated information, I recommend the author to provide some video to explain his idea. Also, he needs more explanation on his pictures and diagrams.

  7. Hi the Passingout !!!

I really appreciate your group name. It is very creative and in your post you explain very well why you chose it.

The blog that you chose is very attractive to visit.

Visuals are useful to teach ideas. And in this blog they are extremely eye-catching, as the “visual map"

So, boring information (as a list of films) become attractive.

People can easily catch the main meaning. You can sum up 10 pages in only one chart!

I think people should use more visual memorizing techniques. It is what I do. When I don’t remember something, I close my eyes, and I see it!

The videos broadcast in the blog promote also creative and innovation. You should see “interactive laser” for example.

Thank you for sharing about this website. I didn’t know it before. Bu now I think that I will put it on my favorites web sites ! 

  8. Thanks for sharing this blog to all of us, I think your group has chosen a good blog. This blog is quite famous in the designers' world. The author likes to collect different graphics in order to promote the creativity and visual communications. I think one of the reasons of not having to many words in the blog is because the author is willing to leave some rooms for the viewers to imagine by themselves. If all the things are written down in the blog, it will properly set boundaries for imagination. The blog is actually providing a platform for the designers, so that they can obtain some ideas from this blog by seeing different graphics. We are not designers so we do want more word explanations, but those graphics may be a treasure in the designers' eyes.

  9. Thanks you for your sharing in this blog.

The blog that you all found is really helpful and educational. This blog reminds me those blog entries are an advanced version of “mind map”, it is not only a diagram to present rounds of ideas and concepts with linkages and relationship, but also a picture which can inspire readers’ mind and stimulate their eyes, therefore to make learning become more interesting.

What I earn from this blog is the different way of learning and memorizing. People can learn ideas and concepts in those maps and diagrams, they can also memorize in an efficient way with the assistance of visual effects and with those relationships clearly stated. This blog inspires me to try more efficient ways to learn, to present and memorize. And I think your blog entry would be better if we can share more different ways to present more than the blog stated. For example: people can use video, audio to assist presenting ideas and concepts.

    Thanks for reading it.

  10. Thank you for sharing, as the above commentators I love your group name too! It is so meaningful, especially the meaning of passing this course and to be the outstanding one. Back to the blog which recommended by you, I also agreed that the visual elements can help us to memorize complicated information in an effective and efficient way, particularly the last minutes before examination :P. As a business student, there are many concepts we need to remember and we usually mix up the concepts, mind-map could help us to solve this problem. Besides, to be a good presenter, well-organized presentation can help our audience to understand what we are trying to deliver. How to deliver a well-organized presentation? Mind-map and diagram could help certainly! However, I think there is one more thing that the blog suggested should be emphasized on. By using visual element not only can help to remember or present something but also help to create new ideas. I found that it is very useful in brain-storming, by linking up different idea, and then it could generate a GREAT idea. Just like what passionlife mentioned, Edison could invent light bulb, maybe he start by the ideas of “electricity”, “heat” and “light” and finally he invented “light bulb”.

  12. I love visual image
Hi everyone, I love you the blog you found “Visual think map”. It consists of so much interesting and inspiring mind map to trigger my thinking. I am a person who also likes to see visual images more than simply plain black and white wordings. Mind maps (or similar concepts) have been used for centuries in learning, brainstorming, memory, visual thinking, and problem solving. It also allows for greater creativity when recording ideas and information, as well as allowing the note-taker to associate words with visual representations.

    Why I love your blog
Creativity is a mental and social process involving the generation of new ideas or concepts, or simply just making something new. I found the blog interesting is that everything can be written or presented as a mind map. A visual picture can contain many concepts and ideas than we think. We won’t figure out if we do not digest the picture. For me, although I found mind map interesting, I don’t fully understand the concepts at all. However, I seldom use the mind map process to think into problems. Is there any mind map which is for the beginners? When I browse at the “Visual think map” blog, most of the mind maps are so complicated.

    Thanks very much for posting
Creativity and innovation is a complex concept for me. I am used to the words by words memory methods. It makes me feel memorizing things or concepts are sorts of disaster for me. I try to use mind map in the previous week class and I found it really works. It helps me to memorize concepts faster than I had expected. It likes a kind of magic tools for studying and providing creative ideas. I love these tools so much and I will show it to all my neighborhoods as well. I thank you so much for posting this wonderful and creative post.

  13. Hi, I admire your explanation of the group name very much! “Passing out,” I hope I will finish this course with a good result too (haha!). I think the photo you used (some people are wearing suit) shows the ambition of your group! You all must be promising young boys. Unfortunately, I don’t have such an ideal of making contribution to the society as all of you, I just want to make contribution to my family=P
Actually, when I see the topic “Visual think map”, I am not interested in it. I think there must be some abstract ideas and theories. But when I was scanning the blog you suggested, I found some funny pictures which are really interesting and I started to read the paragraphs carefully.
Pictures and diagrams can really help to make the messages transfer more effective. It helps to attract the audiences’ focus. Readers are more willing to read the words in the diagrams instead of those in the paragraphs.
I believe the use of visual images can help students to learn more effectively. Visual images should be applied in our learning materials such as notes and readings.

  14. First of all, thank you for the group ‘passing out’ provided the blog ‘Visual think map’. I am interested in it because I am one out of those people who will use mind maps in order to facilitate learning and memorizing, especially for tests and examinations. Same as ‘passing out’ and others said, using visual diagrams and pictures is a leading and creative way to organize the new ideas and help to remember them.

However, I think the ideas present in chosen blog are not easy to understand, it seems that the author just posts different links or websites in related aspect in his blog without any further elaboration. As a reader, I found the concepts showed in the blog ‘Visual think map’ are not clear so I easy get confused. It will be better if the author explains the purposes or methods of drawing visual diagrams.

Last but not least, I really appreciate for your group’s very first blog. I think your group has done a good job, especially on providing suggestions for the blog improvement. I am looking forward for the upcoming blogs and hope that I can be inspired from your blog again.

  15. Well…this is a very creative blog which use the visual think map as the content. It is very useful not only for the student, but also all the people. It is because people need to face different complicated concepts and memorize lots of things in our daily life. By using the pictures, a complex concept can be explained and easier to be understood. Thus, people benefit a lot after reading the blog.

For me, it is good for me since I am a person who are very weak on memorize the concepts in the notes. After reading the blog, I have an idea to transform thousands of words into one single page. Moreover, I learn to change the words into impressive pictures so that I can revise them easily.

Furthermore, the name “passing out” is so meaningful which “passing” and “out” can be understood separately. This idea is so creative since these two words express all if our dream.

However, there is room for improvement for this concept because the visual think map cannot be used in some cases. For example, the concept is so complicated and may be difficult to change them into pictures. In this case, if we insist to use the visual map method, it will waste a lot of time and may make you crazy. The result may be worse than not using the mind map.

  16. Passing out, thank you for your sharing!

First of all, your group name is really creative! The first time I heard your name, I think you did you choose this name? Why you guys want to pass only? However, after your group introduction, I know that “passing out” does not mean passing only, you would like to have a good performance in future also. Therefore, I am so appreciate you guys choose this group name.

Secondly, the blog is so useful and creative. All of us are students. We need to have a great memory to remember all the notes of each subject. However, there are so many things we need to remember and we have not enough memory, it is a big difficult problem we to solve. And after looking your blog, I find a new way to sum up all the things and remember it easily. This is a fresh way for us to study.

Thirdly, although the blog you promote is good, but it is really must be explained more for the viewer. Moreover, the blog theory is good but no one understands it, how can it attract people to explain the authorship and viewership. Therefore, I think this blog is not suitable to promote, I and all of my friends need to spend a lot of time to understand the meaning of the blog. I think that you should choose the blog carefully to promote next time.

Lastly, you may talk more about the authorship and viewership. What is the aim of the author? What is the feedback of the viewer? For example, the author may be only want to help the student to remember something difficult.

  17. Hi, There is only one thing I was concerned about. It was the blog you chose to review. The purpose of the assignment was to introduce a blog which is about creativity or/and innovation. But I dont think your chosen blog was the best choice because the purpose of their blog was not to promote creativity or innovation, but to provide a space to promote visual maps. But you did mention about the use of pictures and diagrams to convey ideas, which is why you think it succeed in promoting creativity and innovation; but it's purpose of it's blog had no relation to creativity or innovation.

I agree with 2411smile on how he/she said you needed to talk more on the authorship and viewership, because that way it will give you a better idea on the purpose of the blog and what it's promoting.

  18. Nice to meet you “Passing Out”! When hearing your group’s name, it sounds like you guys are candidates of Police College and equip yourselves intensively to pass out. In other words, your group decides to step up and acquire the knowledge of creativity and innovation in this entire course. The process of learning something may need a great effort as a student or candidate. Eventually, a certain level of creativity can be inspired and your group can pass out this course or even get a higher grade!

For your blog, your group chooses to introduce “Visual think map” which use simple diagrams and mind maps to bring out abstract theories and ideas. I think it’s creative and cool! It is because people are more willing to see pictures instead of reading thousands of tiny words. Therefore, learning different aspect of knowledge in this method is interesting. Also, you point out that some mind maps are too complicated to see and understand.

In my opinion, your blog can give a deeper analysis of how creativity and innovation can be greatly introduced in the topic and under this method of learning. You may cite some examples in your chosen blog and indicate how good or bad the diagram or mind map is. You may also provide analysis and suggestions to elaborate your views. In conclusion, your blog is worth to visit and keep going to work on.

  19. to Passingout

Hi there, I am from the other class of Dr. Kuo. The opinion towards the inspiring blog is not that valid. The visual diagrams from the blog are just enough. It provides the readers with rich content. It does not make me confusing. But the point of view of different people is different. It is just my opinion.

Unfortunately, the comment to the blog is not well-rounded. It just focuses on the diagrams of the blog. Moreover, more should be concerned, more importantly, the content of the blog. It is simply fantastic. It talks about the human mind and way of thinking. The visual aids clearly illustrate the concepts.

But it seems that the topic of your course is creativity and innovation. The content of the blog is not much related to the topic. Although it is a good blog, it does not match to the topic.

  20. As I know, KFC is a quite successful company in globalization, especially when it first comes into Asia. The reason is Asian are love to eat chicken, and KFC is expertise in deep fried chicken. Although KFC chickens are a little bit greasy and unhealthy, it still can capture a certain amount of market share once it enters to Asia.
KFC can successfully transform its product in different region and culture. We have chicken rice in HK for instance, and KFC even provide Chicken congee for Mainland China citizens as well, which really shows how KFC merge its innovative and globalization together.
I have noticed that you blog have introduced PFK as well. I have actually tried it in Quebec city, where is in the Quebec province. To be honest, HK's KFC is much better than PFK in Canada, as those chickens in Canada are tasteless....
One more thing is you guys really can identify how KFC create its product based on Chinese culture, which showing KFC's creativity.

  21. Thank you for your sharing!

I lived in City hall in last semester and I do agree that the environment is small and crowded. Although we cannot change the area, we can use our creative thinking to change the practical area. “While we think out of norm, break the rules. The creativity comes. But if we are limited by the rules, by what we used to be, creativity never be us.” It is really true and that is the creativity.

I appreciate for your video and it is really a good job. Your group use picture for each steps to make it clear for audience to follow. The materials that used are some useless thing. The work is environmental-friendly and linked with our daily life. In the process of creativity and innovation, it also can promote the message of environmental-friendly. But I think the steps could be more details and the background music can use some relaxing music instead of the ‘love song’. When the readers follow your video to make it, they can listen to the music and feel relax.

‘While we think out of norm, break the rules. The creativity comes. But if we are limited by the rules, by what we used to be, creativity never be us.’ I do agree with it. Actually, I think that the students in Hong Kong are generally lack of creativity. They are used to follow the norms and seldom use own critical thinking to judge the things. So they are generally passive to ask questions and generate new ideas. But I do think that creativity can inspire our life.

Groupthink is a type of thought exhibited by group members who try to minimize conflict and reach consensus without critically testing, analyzing, and evaluating ideas.(from Wikipedia) I don’t denied that group think can stimili ideas and solve problems. But to generate creativity and innovation, I think brainstorming is better. Brainstorming is a group creativity technique designed to generate a large number of ideas. It can gather the ideas of a group of people and generate some new ideas. It is no limits or boundaries.

Moreover, the point of SCAMPER is concrete and useful. It gives us the general guidelines of making an existing product to a new one. But as I mentioned before, I think it only can be a reference list. We should not let any rules to restrict our creativity.

Anyway, good jobs and keep going =)
