Final Blog

Let’s stand out for Creativity!
As the demand of quality of life rising, people trend to require more and more. It makes the business becomes hard because they have to concern about their profit and the customers’ benefit at the same time. But it is believe that if a business develops innovation in their process, it will be success to solve the ethic dilemma. (1) To realize the creative idea come true, there are three steps: I, C and E. I stand for imagination, C for critique, and E for execute. (2) Imagination is very important in innovation, as innovation means something whole new, out of imagination, we are just walking around the bounder. And to choose the method will affect the idea success a lot. Last, when we are ready to be success, the step “E” will let us do so. There is no right or wrong format or rules about how to make a painting creativity journal. (3) not only the “I” is unlimited, but also the “C”. As one innovative idea appearance, the way to practice it should also be very creative, otherwise it just like “old-wine with new bottle”, nothing special at all. We agree on this concept, just like the KFC. As more people aware the health of the food, the KFC becomes unpopular as they are labeled to sell junk food. To improve it, KFC publish some kind of new product like salad. It would help KFC business and solve the dilemma. Creativity has a great impact to the environment. When we change ourselves, the world changes with us. (4) It is a very good indicator to determine our creativity is success or not. Once we had success, there must be some followers. Or we may just being the only stupid. Reflect to KFC case, more and more its competitors develop a health food, and there is less and less restaurant labeled as junk food-selling shop, we think that KFC has changed the world. Explaining our creative ideas is just like telling a joke. (5) Both of them will make people laugh. By because they are lack of imagination, but impossible is nothing. The more people laughing at, the more creative the idea does. The idea is really beyond the times. So do not be shy to show your creativity!

KFC: Controversy? No
There are many controversial issues of KFC about health of customers. All the issues are negative that will badly affect health, for example, obesity issue and injection of chickens. However, KFC has many excuses for those issues. For example, you can choose not to eat the food of KFC if you afraid you will become fat. Also, they decline the claim that injection is given to KFC’s chickens.

Those issues have stimulated the creativity and innovation processes of KFC to think and do more remedies such as CSR and charities in order to make its image clear and positive. For example, it is claimed that the food provided by KFC is unhealthy as those food are mainly junk food without vegetable. This has enabled KFC to design its food creatively in different prospective. Since there are many branches over the world of KFC, it should have many different ideas to improve. KFC now provides more vegetable food than before, for example, sweet corn and salad. And sometimes, it would design some special meals in order to reduce the proportion of junk food. You can see it from the pictures below. In KFC of HK, The special meal has one dish of rice and only one chicken leg and a cup of coke, the rice is not junk food. For the regular meal, all food is junk.

From KFC official websire

Recently, there is a function carrying out by KFC. KFC will sell one of its products, egg tart, voluntarily in order to raise fund for United Nations, for the purpose of charity. And the charity is for some poor nations, such as Ethiopia in Africa. One of the purposes is that to build a clear image of KFC by regularly doing such charity and voluntary works. However, another purpose, which is very creative, is that by telling people there are many poor people without enough food supply in somewhere. How is it so creative? There is one claim that KFC uses technology such as injecting hormone and other anti-biotic to the chickens, which aims at accelerate the growth of chicken and, hence, increase the supply of food. So, even it is controversial, now, KFC has give a message to people technology can help to resolve problems of inadequate food supply to the poor nations.

The Assumption Behind
The analysis above based on an assumption on amoral human nature. The goal of the innovation and creativity process was profit-oriented, not related to any ethical consideration. The organization would adopt the idea which would bring the greatest profit, and the lowest cost to it, no matter the idea involves any ethical issues.

The analysis would be different from before if different assumptions were assumed. If we assume human nature as moral, it will be a great constraint to the creativity and innovation process of individuals, groups, and organizations, as they will consider the innovation with different angles of views so that the idea can satisfy all the needs of different parties and groups.

If we assume human nature as immoral, it will enhance the innovation and creativity process of the organization. But the organization may ignore some issue or even violate some regulations or morals in the society. Those ideas may be contradictive to some moral and ethical issues. Also, the needs of different groups may be hurt during the innovation and creativity process.

Where do KFC’s chickens come from?
Do you doubt about that why KFC would have such a large amount of chicken supply? Maybe, it is possible to produce so many chickens per day in somewhere in the world. However, we are doubt about that. So, we search it in the internet. We found that there are few controversial issues of KFC’s chicken. The hottest controversial issue is the quality of its chickens that the chickens grown and used by KFC are “artificial chickens”. What does “artificial chicken” mean here? It is claimed that those chickens are given injections of hormone, and other anti-biotic in order to accelerate the growth rate of them. It is absolutely controversial as this issue is related to health.

Why does KFC do this?
In the approach of utilitarian, you may be able to know more about why KFC does such action. KFC is not so stupid that if demand is low, it won’t produce so many chickens by giving injections to chicken. Utilitarian can be regarded as greedy and selfish. So, as a utilitarian, you would like to earn benefits, advantages and profits as many as possible. KFC is an international company that it has many branches in many countries. It knows that the demand of its chicken is so large. So, after it acquired the technology to accelerate the growth of chicken, it is reasonable and sensible for KFC to use the injection of hormone in order to gain sales and profits as much as possible, although it may be regarded as immoral by some people.

Moreover, in cost-benefit approach, it has carried out many researches and development to maximize the supply of its chickens. Although the costs are high, the benefits are greater. Technology is used for better off the lives of human. Again, even it may be immoral, KFC still uses injection for its chicken.

Recommendation
1.Parents:
In such a materialistic society as Hong Kong, both parents have to work so as to scrape a living. Parents may work unit late at night. Thus, parents may just leave the money to their children for lunch or dinner. However, most of the children will choose to eat fast food like KFC as they look attractive and taste delicious. It is a great lure to enjoy such wonderful cuisines instead of the plain and ordinary healthy food, consuming these kinds of food in excess contribute to unhealthiness. Thus, I think parent should spend more time with children. Instead of leaving the money to them, parent should care what they eat. Sometimes, they can cook for themselves without going out for dinner. It is relatively more health that is directly related to their children growth.

2.KFC
KCF should try to use some healthy methods to cook the chicken. For example, instead of frying the chicken, KFC can stream the chicken which is relatively much more health. On the other hand, we always see the advisements in television promoting new taste of fried chicken in KFC. However, I think KFC should put more effort in promoting the health food like salad in KFC and try to make them to be more attractive to people.

3.Government
I think government can help to promote the health food frequently. They can make some posters to tell the disadvantage of eating unhealthy food or make an advertisement in television to encourage people to eat more health food. On the other hand, government can reward some enterprise which is producing or selling healthy food. In this way, it can encourage more people invest in healthy food industries. Also, I think government also has the responsibility to minimize the unhealthy food advertisement in television as it indirectly encourages people to eat unhealthy food.

Hall life inspire creative thinking

Hall’ environment
As the Hall of City University is small and crowded, sometimes, it is not enough spaces for us to put many shoes on the floor.
On the other hands, we wear a pair of socks every day which going to school. However, when we come back to hall after school, we usually just place them on the desk or floor instead of hanging them up after washing them, because we do not have the sock stand in our hall.

Way to deal with problem
In order to save more spaces, we want to put the shoes somewhere except putting them on the floor. Also, we want to hand-made a sock stand for us to hang up the socks and save the space.

Inspiration by creative thinking
Firstly, we prepare a lot of rope and connect the rope together. Secondly, we make two small holes on the top of the cardboard box and pass rope through it in order to fix cardboard box up outsides the wardrobe. Therefore, we can simply put the shoes insides the cardboard box and save more space for us.
For socks, sometimes, we buy the bottle of drinks in the supermarket or convenient shop. We will simply throw the bottle to the rubbish bin after drinking. Therefore, it inspires us to use the bottle to hang the socks up. Firstly, we puncture the bottle for two small holes. Secondly, we use wooden chopsticks taken in the canteen of the school to pass through the bottle. Thirdly, we make a hole under the cardboard box and fixed the bottle through the hole under the cardboard box. Finally, we use clothes-pegs through wooden chopsticks to hang the socks up. In this way, we can fully make use of the cardboard box and create more space.
Besides, we place a small mirror insides the cardboard box to make it like a toilet box. We also place an alarm clock at the top of cardboard box in order to make full use of it.

Individual Thinking and Inspiration and Group Process
One member of our group, Ngai Pok Keung, a year 2 student, is living in the Cityu residence. In his first year living in the hall, some clothes were stolen when he dried his clothes at the roof of hall. Then, he decided not to dry his clothes outside his room. However, the room is not big enough to dry all of his clothes. So, he suggested the idea whether can we think of some tools to help drying clothes in hall residence.
Afterwards, we met in several times to brainstorm about what creative ideas can we think of the material of shoes box. Each time we meet, we progressed forward step by step. Finally, we decided to use what we made.

What are enablers and inhibitors? How to do in individual and group?
The thing enable and inhibit we be creative is our thinking process. While we think out of norm, break the rules. The creativity comes. But if we are limited by the rules, by what we used to be, creativity never be us. For example, in this Blog, how do we make fun on the cardboard box? In the very first moment, we are all thinking it is just a box and so that cannot come out with so much idea. It is an example we are limited by rule. But while we try to observe the special of the box, we find out much feasibility. Such as the hole of the box can mixed with a bottle where would create a stand to place the chopstick.
When we are along, it is better that we just simply write down all the idea on the paper, no matter it is seems possible or not. And then practice it to find out which is possible. It is a good way to capitalize one the enablers and overcome the inhibitors individually.
When we are in group, brainstorming and discussion can be used. These two processes can stimulate the ideas. As there are more people thinking, the consideration will be much more detailed. And the chance to fail will be decreased.

Individual vs. Group
Each individual would have their each ideas and thinking. However, no matter how creative is that person, group thinking is always better. So, we group our ideas together and see whether what can be done creatively.
A lot of ideas and creativities would be hidden in your mind of brain. However, most of them are hidden that you may not be able to remember it easily and you are always unfamiliar with those information hidden in your brain. So, when we are having discussion, others will stimulate our hidden memory. As a result, we would be more creative if we have intensive interactions with other people.

Creativity Tools - An Introduction..
Lateral thinking recognizes that our brains are pattern recognition systems. Do not function like computers. It takes years of training before we learn to do simple arithmetic - something that computers do very easily. Unfortunately, we get stuck in our patterns. We tend to think within them. That is why it is mentioned above your hidden memory that out of your patterns will be stimulated by group process.

SCAMPER
SCAMPER is a checklist that helps you to think of changes you can make to an existing product to create a new one. The followings are the meaning of them:
• S - Substitute - components, materials, people
• C - Combine - mix, combine with other assemblies or services, integrate
• A - Adapt - alter, change function, use part of another element
• M - Modify - increase or reduce in scale, change shape, modify attributes (e.g. colour)
• P - Put to another use
• E - Eliminate - remove elements, simplify, reduce to core functionality
• R - Reverse - turn inside out or upside down, also use of Reversal

Although it is always better if you have a check list for your work/job, however, we would consider creativity as a king of flair. It means that you cannot control you do thing creatively by using a check list. So, we disagree with the idea by using a check list to promote creative.

Creative Uses of Cigarettes in Anti-smoking Ads
In the web page, you can see many anti-smoking Ads. Each of the Ads is presented by a photo or a graph. It is a fantastic way to present your creative thinking. Creativity is difficult to be present to others by using only words or some vague tools. So, I would suggest you to use photos or graphs to create your creativity.

What is the metaphor of our project?
The metaphor of our creative project is “the need is the mother of innovation.” What does it means? It means that satisfying needs of users is the main objective of designing our project. We think that it is meaningless to design an object without satisfying any important needs of users. We would like to enhance the convenience in our daily lives without imposing great cost to users. Therefore we have used paper boxes as the main material, which are disposed and could be easily collected and reused everyday.
How did this metaphor helped concisely convey our inspirational story?
Our metaphor is the core of our project. All the ideas and design would thus be around this core. Due to this metaphor, we firstly thought about what the needs were to be satisfied by our object. In this process, we had thought up too many needs in our daily lives, so we decided to focus on needs of students who are living in the student residence. We chose this target group because around us there are many classmates living in the student residence. We could then bring the immediate benefits to them.

What have been given up?
As we mentioned before, the core of our project is “the need is the mother of innovation.” We tried to satisfy the needs of classmates living in the student residence. As a result, some designs which can satisfy needs which are not common in living the student residence would be given up. For example, we have ever thought up that a paper box could be used to contain newspaper, but most of students living in the student residence would not buy newspaper, thus we eventually gave up this uses.
We also tried to use aluminum cans as the main material of our material. However, our object had some cutting on our material. We found that if we have cutting on aluminum cans, its edges would be too sharp, and so it can possibly hurt the user. To eliminate this risk, we decided to use paper boxes instead of aluminum cans as the main material of our object.

Fried Chicken fly far

KFC
http://www.kfchk.com/

Background

KFC, Kentucky Fried Chicken, is a chain of fast food restaurants which mainly sells fried chicken. But, it also sells a wide variety of food, including hamburgers, desserts, salads, etc. It is found by Colonel Harland Sanders in 1952, with his first idea of selling fried chicken was in 1930. Although it was a little bit late than the expected, now, KFC is one of the top 100 enterprises in the world.

How KFC engaged in globalization

Product

Under globalization, KFC has set up many branches all over the world. Ingredients, cooking method used for cooking chicken of KFC has some difference in various countries because of eating culture or taste difference. Category of food in KFC is also not the same all over the world. KFC create own menu for their countries. Some kind of food is only available for selling in that particular country’ KFC. For example, in Hong Kong, people like to eat rice. Therefore, KFC has promoted mushroom rice for people in Hong Kong.

Mushroom riceChicken king rice

In Australian, we can find that cheesy BBQ Meltz and coconut pie is available for selling in KFC. This kind of food may not be found in other countries’ KFC. In other words, globalization allows KFC to create special and new food for people in various countries.

Branches’ name

As the effect of globalization, KFC would start their business all over the world. Although KFC is already famous, it not only uses the name “KFC”. Under the different of language, KFC has used different names in different countries. For example, in Philippines, KFC stands for “Kapag Fried Chicken......,mag-KFC” which means “if fried chicken … have KFC”. KFC has successfully transfer their name into others meaning even in different culture. It’s a mix of globalization and creativity. Also there will be some limit in a new culture.

In Canada, there is a ban for using language other than French. So KFC has renamed as “Poulet Frit Kentucky”. The name “PFK”, which is similar to “KFC”, means Kentucky fried chicken. It is a creative way to avoid illegal and would remain the representation.

Promotion

Another evidence also shows us that globalization has enabled KFC to be more creative and innovative is that the promotion ways of KFC. Globalization can be regarded as the improved communication from the people all over the world. The main channel empowers international communication is the internet. The materials from the internet can show how KFC becomes more creative through globalization.

As you can see from the above picture, KFC provides coupons for you with certain discounts. But, it is creative that you are not provided the physical coupons, instead, the coupons are in the form of virtual that you have to print them by yourself, which do not have a limit to download.

Another online promotion way is that KFC has set up the Colonel’s Email Club that you can join the club. Then, KFC will send you the latest news and promotion campaign regularly once you joined the club.

Moreover, KFC promotes in the website other than its own official site, for example, Youtube. Apart from the formal advertisement (say, broadcasted in TV), it also creates some special video and advertisement which are posted in the internet. As the rule or the standard in the internet is freer, the promotions and advertisement created for the internet could be more creative than the formal.

Impacted the creativity and innovation processes

We found that globalization has somehow impacted the creativity and innovation process. The sense of protecting the Earth has increased through globalization. So, it prompts KFC to think of social responsibility. KFC has stated in its official website that the greater food KFC provides, and the more money it earns, the better the welfare for the society, including education, diversity and animal welfare.

For example, if you have excellent academic results, or serious financial problems, you can apple for the KFC Colonel’s Scholars for your study. This scholar of KFC is just one of the examples that KFC does for the social. As KFC mainly sells fried food, which is regarded as “rubbish food”, so, KFC is always blamed for selling those unhealthy foods in many countries.

eating culture

KFC is famous for fried chicken. Under globalization of KFC, it has a big impact in eating culture in various countries. Take China as an example; before KFC enter the market of China, most people mainly eat traditional food such as rice or porridge in their daily life. Most of them like to eat rice or traditional food in restaurant or other place. However, when KFC enter the market of China, it changes people eating culture from eating tradition food to fast food (fried chicken). People go KFC frequently for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sometimes, even gathering with friends, party or family, most of them choose to go KFC instead of restaurant. Therefore, under globalization of KFC, western eating culture has transfer to china and other countries. Tradition food is not the main food for people anymore. AS you see that the number of branch of KFC is rapidly increasing. It implies that our eating culture has affected by KFC very much.

Another famous thing of KFC, it is no doubt that the trade make of them – the Colonel Sander. Who is also the founder of KFC. This elder, as a icon, has impacted deeply all over the world. In many of the branches, there must be the figure stand in front of them. Because it already be an image that, where he standing, where would enjoy the fried chicken.

This icon makes a lot of reaction. We would find a lot of funny pictures about him which are created by all other over the world. It would show that Colonel Sander is no longer the representative of a company.

Example in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is the special administration region of China. The main food Hong Kong people eat is rice, especially in the past. Although rice still is the main food we eat everyday, the culture of eating rice everyday is somehow affected by the globalization that the KFC has established branches in Hong Kong. If you want to have meals in KFC, you may choose mashed potato or crosscut fries instead of rice. Some Hong Kong people would also learn the cooking method that they will cook some dishes together with mashed potato instead of the traditional rice.

Suggestion

So, are there any ways to improve business creativity and innovation? If all the local organization, governments can provide more support for innovation and create an atmosphere of advocating creativity, the world can be full of ideas and creativities.

We suggest that the government can set up some research facilities for local companies so that they can have sufficient space and facilities to conduct research. On the other hand, some award programs can be granted to local companies for excellent and meaningful research so as to provide more incentives to local industries to stimulate their ideas.

Moreover, the government can offer some subsidies for national industries, for example, manufacturing industry or cultural industries like film-making, music and publishing, and even for foreign investors in technology intensive sectors. This action can give out a message that the government is enthusiastic to enhance the creativity and innovation of each industry.

We believe that an enforceable law of protect intelligence property right can effectively improve the creativity and innovation of organizations and individual. Let see the current situation of China. What is the reason of the serious problem of pirated products? It’s because the China Government cannot enforce those patent and copyright law. This problem can lower the revenue of industries and ultimately lowers the incentives to invest. This really frustrates the creativity and innovation of organizations and individual.

Education is also important for the creativity and innovation of organization and individual in the future. The Government can carry out some learning program or development scheme in educational institutes for further development of creative talents in the business and technology field. This action can maintain a steady supply of talents in creativity and innovation field to the business industry.

Revision

Thank you for all yours comments.

According to the blog, it mentions that KFC provide different types of food in various countries to cater the taste of local people. It just like localizes KFC food but not globalization. However, it should be clear that fried chicken is introduced to all countries under globalization. Fried chicken is a symbol of KFC which is famous for its fried chicken all over the world under globalization. Although each country has its own menu, fried chicken must be included in the menu of KFC in all countries. KFC which provides various foods in various countries just want to keep diversity and it is a tactic to make KFC success under globalization. We agree that coconut pie in Australian or mushroom rice in Hong Kong is just like localization but not globalization. However, it is no doubt that fried chicken is the globalization of KFC. What come to our mind at the first time when we hear the name of KFC is fried chicken.

Also, KFC has put a big effort in globalization. They have the big farm in U.S. to breed the chicken and export to different countries. They specialize in cooking chicken. These are globalization process of KFC.

On the other hands, KFC also change the elder’s diet habit. It is common that we see the elderly have a tea in KFC. However, I agree that we still prefer to go yum cha in the restaurant because eating too much fried chicken is not good for their health. Also, I think KFC also become gathering place for the elderly but not just young generation. Most of them like to buy a milk tea and sit for a long time to cheat with their friends in KFC.

Social responsibility = environmental protection?

Some of you may doubt about it seems that not much have been done by KFC to protect the environment. Maybe, here, we clarify that the social responsibility that KFC cares is not mainly focused in environmental protection. Or in other words, it is nothing special about environmental protection that how creative do you want with protecting the Earth? Just using recyclable utensils?

Actually, what are shown in the official website of KFC about the social responsibility are the Colonel’s Scholarship, social diversity, supplier code of conducts, and animal welfare program.

For the Colonel’s Scholarship, it is creative that KFC is a fast food shop, but, why does it need to sponsor student for further study? We think the idea is creative that KFC relates many things to education. Also, maybe, KFC understand the rationale that by using recyclable utensils which is too simple and not enough in protecting our environment and combating global warming. But, can we invent some things or ideas that can protect our environment, say, a better fuel for frying chicken, or advanced environmental friendly utensils. However, we think KFC can sponsor more R&D

Social diversity would also be another funny and creative idea that KFC targets in social diversity. Inside its management hierarchy, different people with different nationality would be hired and make decision. It is a globalization inside itself that KFC would present the whole world as people around the world are hired in KFC. Also, because of different national culture between different people, the ideas would be very great and are likely to be creative and innovative. So, this strategy can really help KFC to be more creative and innovative.

Rice= main food of Chinese/Hong Kong people

2411greentea thought there is a contradiction in our blog. Maybe, we should clarify what we mean. The main food of Chinese, including Hong Kong people, is still rice. But, western eating culture, including the culture of KFC, has affected our eating culture, or eating habit that we no longer eat rice only. Maybe, we eat spaghetti, or mashed potato. However, do you think that globalization can change everything? The answer seems to be no in this case. So, each foreign restaurant or fast food shop must think of some local features and implement them so as to suit the culture and taste of the local people. Moreover, you can also say that the change in Hong Kong people is that they now love fast food as they save time and convenience that many of them are so busy.

Some of you would like to ask about what KFC has done for the green culture. One of you has pointed out that KFC has used recyclable cutlery since 2007, such as, using plastic cup instead of paper cup, distributing metal-made spoon and fork which are washable to replace disposable cutlery. And also, KFC is concerned about other environmental aspects, including energy saving. But, the measurements may not be creative as they are just simple ideas. For more details,Please go to the following website: http://www.yum.com/responsibility/diversity.asp

How can KFC improve its creativity?

I

nvolve Frontline Employees

Some of the best ideas for process improvement lie with the process owners. This is not a new concept, but it bears emphasizing. Frequently, the process owners are frontline people who do not have the chance to participate in improvement efforts. While they may not be formally trained in quality tools, their closeness to the process is a vantage point second to none. Every project or deployment needs to ask the question: "Who knows the process or sub process best, and how are we assessing their unique knowledge and insight?"

Improvement efforts are often staffed by technical experts and mid- to senior-level managers. To avoid missing key opportunities that frontline people could identify instinctively, project leaders need to make participation broad and inclusive. This can be done in a variety of ways, including interviews and group brainstorming sessions, or through asking process owners to be on the team.

To be able to effectively elicit insights from a diverse array of down-the-line personnel, at a minimum, project leaders need facilitation skills training, coaching and practice.

Enable Cross-fertilization

Actively involving process and project leaders in an improvement effort will create cross-functional conversations and foster new connections. Not only can this interaction uncover creative ideas that might not be apparent in analysis alone, but it also invests the owners in the solution derived.

Part of any solution should include ongoing dialogue and coordinated responses through shared metrics and governance, regular joint problem-solving sessions and so on. These exchanges are invaluable. Improvement efforts should be viewed as enabling cross-fertilization in addition to simply solving a particular problem.

Break Down the Barriers

In general, what is done routinely does not stimulate creativity. Stirring the pot does – as in breaking down the constraints on lower-level workers interacting with senior managers. Just as accessing the ideas and experience of frontline people in cross-functional brainstorming can yield unexpected benefits, so, too, can involving frontline people in making recommendations to senior management.

Building in vertical connections and idea sharing can infuse energy and creativity into any project or deployment. But care needs to be taken to allow for adequate preparation so that everyone shines in these discussions, reinforcing the idea that innovation can (and should) come from every level.

Think of Projects and Initiatives in Terms of Strategic Priorities

One of the most seductive pitfalls is to become comfortable with doing projects that are in themselves attractive, without paying sufficient attention to overall optimization. It is common to find deployments filled with projects that have attractive returns on investment but do not move the needle on performance parameters that matter in the marketplace. In selecting projects and building a portfolio of improvement initiatives, clear linkage to strategic priorities needs to be established, not just at the outset but on an ongoing basis.

Successes, Failure and suggestions in promoting creativity and innovation
In our opinion, the blog is quite successful in promoting creativity and innovation. It is not common to find some ideas or concepts which can be fully presented by applying some visual elements. Even we find that many books or notes provide some diagrams to help us understand their ideas, they are just auxiliary. it is the first time when people use pictures along to present certain ideas. The method and graphic shown in the blog can really help you understand ideas and relationships between different subjects, in order to remember and memorize them.

On the other hand, the blog we chose involves a huge range of topics, ranging from academic to entertainment, science to art. The whole blog is presented by diagram for multiple purposes. You would learn business frameworks, structure of brain, mathematical formulas and so forth. Also you would find something interesting like the change of logos of Pepsi and Coca cola, models of cars, etc. Usually, a blog is just for one purpose, but this one would fulfill viewers’ different needs. That is a reason why we chose this blog. We will not feel bored when we visit this blog.

To our understanding not all of the ideas can be clearly presented by pictures. Even Sometimes, it will become more complex if many pictures are used. Therefore, we suggest that the blog can provide some explanation with texts below the diagram. In this way, the viewers can have a better understanding of the ideas and concepts.

Moreover, some of the pictures and relationship diagrams are really so complicated that it sometimes really confuses viewers. So, it would be better if those diagrams and pictures are more focused on a more specific area within a discipline.

Revision / extension
Thank You! All of your kindly comments are very helpful. We will talk about the advantages that you mentioned.

First of all, many of you think that the visual presentation or mind map can help people memorize and understand ideas easier. Moreover, sometimes, some ideas are closely related and their relationships are complex. Instead if using boring texts only, using visual mind map can help differentiate them, then you will not mix them up again.

Apart from helping better memorize and understand ideas, another advantage of using mind map is that pictures are more interesting than solely use of boring texts. It is more attractive by reading some curious, fresh context picture than the dull texts. As a result, you should have a higher efficiency of learning, especially during your revisions before examinations.

However, you guys have suggested some obstacles in promoting creativity of our blog.

Sometimes, because you don’t have the specific knowledge in some aspects, or the relationships between entities are over complicated, so you don’t understand what the mind map is talking about as only pictures are shown to explain the ideas without any texts. So, it is suggested that the authors or creators should explain more, especially for some new or difficult aspects. But, in our opinion, for some aspects, say, about some medical problems or technology, if you are not experts of those aspects, will you really look at those materials? So, we think you would know what is going on in the pictures.

Moreover, you may doubt about that some pictures may not be able to be unified as each individual would have their own images and pictures of the same objects. So, it may make readers confused and it may not be proper to use visual map to present new ideas. However, we agree with 2411.Frontier that it would give some rooms for readers to imagine by themselves. As you know, you can still do further researches after read the visual mind map. So, we think it is not a big problem.

3430 Ocean thought it would be better to use some software that makes the mind map in your computer instead of drawing physically. It is a very helpful suggestion. And we agree that it would be more flexible and convenient. You can draw in your computer, and then, you can read it by your computer, or you can also print it out as handouts. The link that 3430 Ocean provided is that http://www.edrawsoft.com/freemind.php .

In conclusion, visual mind map would have its own advantages but also drawbacks. But, what we want to focus more on is that our group is not concerned about what aspects the blog shows. More importantly, we would like to suggest you to use visual mind map as a new presentation way that you can use in a formal presentation, or just make it for your exam revisions. Finally, again, thank you for all your helpful comments.
