Hall life inspire creative thinking

Hall’ environment
As the Hall of City University is small and crowded, sometimes, it is not enough spaces for us to put many shoes on the floor.
On the other hands, we wear a pair of socks every day which going to school. However, when we come back to hall after school, we usually just place them on the desk or floor instead of hanging them up after washing them, because we do not have the sock stand in our hall.

Way to deal with problem
In order to save more spaces, we want to put the shoes somewhere except putting them on the floor. Also, we want to hand-made a sock stand for us to hang up the socks and save the space.

Inspiration by creative thinking
Firstly, we prepare a lot of rope and connect the rope together. Secondly, we make two small holes on the top of the cardboard box and pass rope through it in order to fix cardboard box up outsides the wardrobe. Therefore, we can simply put the shoes insides the cardboard box and save more space for us.
For socks, sometimes, we buy the bottle of drinks in the supermarket or convenient shop. We will simply throw the bottle to the rubbish bin after drinking. Therefore, it inspires us to use the bottle to hang the socks up. Firstly, we puncture the bottle for two small holes. Secondly, we use wooden chopsticks taken in the canteen of the school to pass through the bottle. Thirdly, we make a hole under the cardboard box and fixed the bottle through the hole under the cardboard box. Finally, we use clothes-pegs through wooden chopsticks to hang the socks up. In this way, we can fully make use of the cardboard box and create more space.
Besides, we place a small mirror insides the cardboard box to make it like a toilet box. We also place an alarm clock at the top of cardboard box in order to make full use of it.

Individual Thinking and Inspiration and Group Process
One member of our group, Ngai Pok Keung, a year 2 student, is living in the Cityu residence. In his first year living in the hall, some clothes were stolen when he dried his clothes at the roof of hall. Then, he decided not to dry his clothes outside his room. However, the room is not big enough to dry all of his clothes. So, he suggested the idea whether can we think of some tools to help drying clothes in hall residence.
Afterwards, we met in several times to brainstorm about what creative ideas can we think of the material of shoes box. Each time we meet, we progressed forward step by step. Finally, we decided to use what we made.

What are enablers and inhibitors? How to do in individual and group?
The thing enable and inhibit we be creative is our thinking process. While we think out of norm, break the rules. The creativity comes. But if we are limited by the rules, by what we used to be, creativity never be us. For example, in this Blog, how do we make fun on the cardboard box? In the very first moment, we are all thinking it is just a box and so that cannot come out with so much idea. It is an example we are limited by rule. But while we try to observe the special of the box, we find out much feasibility. Such as the hole of the box can mixed with a bottle where would create a stand to place the chopstick.
When we are along, it is better that we just simply write down all the idea on the paper, no matter it is seems possible or not. And then practice it to find out which is possible. It is a good way to capitalize one the enablers and overcome the inhibitors individually.
When we are in group, brainstorming and discussion can be used. These two processes can stimulate the ideas. As there are more people thinking, the consideration will be much more detailed. And the chance to fail will be decreased.

Individual vs. Group
Each individual would have their each ideas and thinking. However, no matter how creative is that person, group thinking is always better. So, we group our ideas together and see whether what can be done creatively.
A lot of ideas and creativities would be hidden in your mind of brain. However, most of them are hidden that you may not be able to remember it easily and you are always unfamiliar with those information hidden in your brain. So, when we are having discussion, others will stimulate our hidden memory. As a result, we would be more creative if we have intensive interactions with other people.

Creativity Tools - An Introduction..
Lateral thinking recognizes that our brains are pattern recognition systems. Do not function like computers. It takes years of training before we learn to do simple arithmetic - something that computers do very easily. Unfortunately, we get stuck in our patterns. We tend to think within them. That is why it is mentioned above your hidden memory that out of your patterns will be stimulated by group process.

SCAMPER
SCAMPER is a checklist that helps you to think of changes you can make to an existing product to create a new one. The followings are the meaning of them:
• S - Substitute - components, materials, people
• C - Combine - mix, combine with other assemblies or services, integrate
• A - Adapt - alter, change function, use part of another element
• M - Modify - increase or reduce in scale, change shape, modify attributes (e.g. colour)
• P - Put to another use
• E - Eliminate - remove elements, simplify, reduce to core functionality
• R - Reverse - turn inside out or upside down, also use of Reversal

Although it is always better if you have a check list for your work/job, however, we would consider creativity as a king of flair. It means that you cannot control you do thing creatively by using a check list. So, we disagree with the idea by using a check list to promote creative.

Creative Uses of Cigarettes in Anti-smoking Ads
In the web page, you can see many anti-smoking Ads. Each of the Ads is presented by a photo or a graph. It is a fantastic way to present your creative thinking. Creativity is difficult to be present to others by using only words or some vague tools. So, I would suggest you to use photos or graphs to create your creativity.

What is the metaphor of our project?
The metaphor of our creative project is “the need is the mother of innovation.” What does it means? It means that satisfying needs of users is the main objective of designing our project. We think that it is meaningless to design an object without satisfying any important needs of users. We would like to enhance the convenience in our daily lives without imposing great cost to users. Therefore we have used paper boxes as the main material, which are disposed and could be easily collected and reused everyday.
How did this metaphor helped concisely convey our inspirational story?
Our metaphor is the core of our project. All the ideas and design would thus be around this core. Due to this metaphor, we firstly thought about what the needs were to be satisfied by our object. In this process, we had thought up too many needs in our daily lives, so we decided to focus on needs of students who are living in the student residence. We chose this target group because around us there are many classmates living in the student residence. We could then bring the immediate benefits to them.

What have been given up?
As we mentioned before, the core of our project is “the need is the mother of innovation.” We tried to satisfy the needs of classmates living in the student residence. As a result, some designs which can satisfy needs which are not common in living the student residence would be given up. For example, we have ever thought up that a paper box could be used to contain newspaper, but most of students living in the student residence would not buy newspaper, thus we eventually gave up this uses.
We also tried to use aluminum cans as the main material of our material. However, our object had some cutting on our material. We found that if we have cutting on aluminum cans, its edges would be too sharp, and so it can possibly hurt the user. To eliminate this risk, we decided to use paper boxes instead of aluminum cans as the main material of our object.

  1. Well, it is nice to read your blog. I think your designed product will be useful for people.
I agree with you that our creative ideas will be prohibited from our thinking processes. Most of our time, when we get an interesting idea that is not appear before; there must have some questions such as can we really do that, is it possible, and will it break the tradition? And these questions will forbid further creative thinking. So, I think is that traditional customs and rules would prevent our creativity?
On the other hand, I think “fun can make change to our thinking and behavior”. Creativity is not just induced by brainstorming; it is a part of it but not at all. What else can elicit our creativity? I think it is fun. For example, most of us will use elevator instead of the stairs. However, if we think in an interesting way, can we play while we are walking the stairs? Yes, it can. I know that some people try to make the stairs as a piano. When people are walking on it, it will have a sound. And after that, more people use the stairs.
Finally, I think that group thinking is more powerful than individual thinking. Although within a group, there will have conflicts; if we can handle these conflicts well, they can encourage us to think further and even get a surprise. Just like what Confucius said, “Amongst three people walking together, at least one can be my teacher”. We can select the good points and avoid the poor one.

  2. Your ideas are really interesting. I cannot think that you can make different use of cardboard box like this. It is because I have not lived in student resident hall. It really good, but I think you can generate more ideas to introduce these topic. I think the video is too short. Also, I think it is better to make the subtitle bigger because it is difficult to see.

Also, I don’t agree with you opinion about SCAMPER. I think the SCAMPER is providing the direction how you can think creatively; For example, we can combine different assemblies into one object and it is an innovative product, rather than generate ideas follow all 7 steps.

Moreover, I think you misunderstand the word "group thinking". Group thinking is talking about the whole group have similiar thinking rather than the members in the group have different thinking.

Thank you for reading my comments.

  3. Thanks for sharing this blog. I find the products creatively made by you pretty useful and funny. I appreciate your imagination of the use of cardboard boxes as well as your aims for creating the products. This is because you are able to think about some products related to our everyday life and of usefulness. More importantly, you tried to instill the idea of environmental protection into your products by using some materials which can be reused, like aluminum cans and bottles. Creating environmentally friendly products is such an admirable concept nowadays.

However, I just doubt the use of quarterly cut plastic bottles for placing newspapers. As we still need to find somewhere to place the plastic bottle, it seems meaningless to put newspapers in it. For example, when the plastic bottle holding newspapers is placed on a table, why don’t we just use a rubber band to tie the newspapers and place it on the table?

I agree with you that we better have more interactions and communications with other people. Apart from being able to get inspired of new ideas from others’ opinion, we may also reconsider our original ideas and try to think more improvement upon discussion with and challenges by the others.

  4. Thank you for your sharing. I appreciate your idea that within a limited area, your group can still think of ways to improve your living. I am sure it helps students living in the residence a lot.

I agree that SCAMPER can be a checklist that helps you think of changes you can make to an existing product to create a new one. But before that, I think observance is more important. You need to be aware of your surroundings so that you can think of something you would like to improve through creativity.

In additional, I also agree that group thinking can generate more ideas and comprehensive than individual thinking. Each person has different strength and weaknesses. You may view a part of the problem while others may help bring out the solutions. As Natalie mentioned, through interactions and communications, better ideas can come out.

  5. I second Cyan's opinion about creativity. Here is the link to the video where stairs and escalators were besides each other and how creative use of stairs made people walk on it more than using the escalator, thereby, savign a lto of enery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fA36ZZ35fsM

I disagree with 2411rkgryo's point of group thinking. Individual thinking is a part of group thinking. It is only hen an individual think's independently and then gives out his/her opinion to the group can the group get a flow/direction of thoughts. we all need to think with the group as well as outside the group and then share it with the group mates. This is how we can have an effective discussion.

Moreover, i personally believe that creativity has no limits or boundaries. Once you give in a constrain to an individual, it becomes very difficult for that person to think creatively and stick to the constrains at the same time. As they say, "Creativity is a type of learning process where the teacher and pupil are located in the same individual." SO we need to teach ourselves and then question ourselves about our own queries!

I believe that the video you created could have been a bit better. You could have chosen a better background sound that could have supplemented your 'creative' thinking. Moreover, you could have also shown the group processes and the failures as well as your success while creating the items that you had wished to create.

  6. Thanks for your creative ideas that it benefits many students who are living in dorm.

Undoubtedly, the ideas you have mentioned can save some space. However, it is a pity that it can carry a pair of shoes in a box only as many students especially girls have lots of pairs of shoes. Furthermore, the bottles make it as sock-stand. It is fun! If it can hang the clothes on, it will be great!

In your hand-made products, you have used lots of materials like ropes and pairs of chopsticks. It is better to simplifier the products. As people are busy with their work or study, I wonder if they are willing to spend lots of time to make their own products. Time conflict and materialism are the hindering factors of DIY. If students want to be convenience, they will buy the existing products in the market instead of making it. Therefore, to attract students to use ideas, the products should be creative, useful and attractive.

Creativity can be transferred by words, videos and graph. I agree with your point. I think people can get inspired from them. Every people have different views on the same things. Therefore, I think your group could get inspired and get lots of creative ideas.

Finally, danger or safety is one of the hamper factors to ban your ideas. However, as you banned the container of newspaper. I think even we do not use it to contain newspapers; we can contain some other pieces of papers.
Therefore, it is not necessary to ban this idea.

Anyway, it is great to visit your blog. Thanks!=)

  7. Firstly, I would like to appreciate on your group’s great job of thinking about interesting drying tools and clothing stands built by using rope, cardboard, bottles and so on. We can save money to build those necessities ourselves. The followings are my comments:

I think that we cannot say group thinking is definitely the best in all situations. Whether group thinking is effective or not depends on many factors. For example, whether atmosphere of the group can encourage all individuals express their ideas freely. If the atmosphere is encouraging, it can foster more creative ideas as group mates come from different background and cultures will have different perception and opinion. However, group thinking may pass some pressures to individuals and force them to conform with and think in the same way of the whole group.

Moreover, I agree that creativity may come as a sudden unpredictably by stimulation and inspiration. It is known as accidental thinking technique. However, I don’t agree that check list is useless to promote creativity. There are some situations that we need to brainstorm and force ourselves to come up with new ideas. For example, a company needs to think of producing a new product line to enhance its profitability. Hence, we cannot sit and wait for creativity happens. This thinking process is known as deliberate thinking technique. In this case, check list acts as a tool to help us thinking broadly in thinking of new products. For example, we used to use standardized clothing stands to dry our clothes, but your group thinks of using and combining other materials such as rope and cardboards to substitute the original one. Therefore, I think SCAMPER checklist is useful for deliberate thinking technique but have less value on accidental technique.

  8. Thank you for your group shows some creative ideas in your blog.

I appreciate your group start the creative idea by thinking about your hall life. I always think that creative is easily started from our surroundings and daily life. It is so nice that your group does notice about your personal life and needs. I agree with your position that group thinking is usually better than individual thinking. It was because each individual can be stimulated by interacting and discussing with other but not only sticking to own personal thought. I also agree ‘We think that it is meaningless to design an object without satisfying any important needs of users.’ It the objects are not usable, it will be called as creative items but just some random thought. I think this is the point that your group could be pay more attention on.

I like your video because it is very clear and understandable about your group’s ideas. It also shows the steps and process of your creative journey. It definitely helps the viewers to understand and be inspired by your thought. I am really appreciated your ideas with a strong sense of creative components in it. However, as your group said ‘the room is not big enough to dry all of his clothes’, then what’s the point to make a even more space-occupied object for handling clothes? Your group also mentioned ‘place them on the desk or floor instead of hanging them up after washing them, because we do not have the sock stand in our hall’, however, I am doubted is it really the truth? It was because I am living in student resident for more than a year, I didn’t hear of any complains about not having sock stand so hall mates will put their sock on the desk or floor. It is even more convenience and common that people will dry clean in the laundry the roof top or use clothes stand.

For the usage of box to put shoes in, I think it is a good idea but not really applicable and satisfy residents’ need. It was because it is very inconvenience for opening and closing the wardrobe doors and also the room door as the room door is close to the wardrobe in Cityu student residence hall. Also, it would be better if your group can think from a wider angle that how about girls? As some of the above commenters also suggest, girls have many shoes and long boots, is it still possible to use your idea then?

Anyway, I really appreciate your innovative and creative idea. I am inspired by it and I am waiting for your upcoming blog entry in the near future. Thank yo

  9. Thank you for your creative idea of using rope and paper box.

I have never lived in the student residence before; however, from your photos, I can see the rooms are really crowded. Therefore, your idea should be practical there. I think this idea also works in most of the Hong Kong’s households because many Hong Kong residences are tiny. Nevertheless, I wonder, why don’t you just put the socks on a pole or rope, just like what you are doing with the towels? And would it be a bit unhygienic if you put a pair of shoe high at the eye level? Hopefully your foots are free from “Hong Kong foot”, otherwise, I think your roommate would have complaints on you. 

Instead of slideshow, I think it would be better if you could make it a movie to illustrate the making-of of your product. That would make your illustration more interesting. The most important thing is, it can show some detailed parts of the making process. From your slideshow, I can’t really see it clearly how the product is worked out since the subtitle is so small and the pictures aren’t always clear enough to complement with it.

By the way, I totally agree with you that thinking in group can generate synergy effects by collective wisdom. I believe nobody is powerful enough to have thought of any ideas that are suggested by the others. Even if it is the case, opinions by the others can still take the role of criticizing and fine toning the raw idea, resulting in a better product. 2411rkgryo mentioned that the bloggers may misunderstand the meaning of group thinking. In my opinion, it is just a matter of terminology. Academically, “group think” does represent a shortcoming of thinking in group. However, it is a bit troublesome to use the word “thinking in group” all the time. As long as everybody can get the meaning correctly, I think there is no need to be so serious here. So, enjoy the blog. Thank you for reading. :]

  10. I live in student residence this year and I agree that the room is too crowded and small which the place isn’t enough for us to put all the things on the floor. It is glad to see that your group is so creative in designing the shoes box and sock stand in order to save more places. The video shows clearly the steps of making the shoes box and sock stand and it looks not difficult to product one. Therefore, I will try to make one.

The design of the shoes box and sock stand not only shows your creativeness, but also the awareness of environmental friendly. It is because the materials of the product mainly recycle from useless things, such as bottles, boxes and newspapers. Our earth is under more pressure than before since human impact on the earth became severely in recent decades. Many global problems, for examples, global warning, different kinds of pollution and overfishing are appeared. Those problems affect the whole of the planet and potentially all of the people who live on it. If we don’t start to protect our earth at this moment, our planet would become not suitable for living anymore.

By the way, group thinking is a kind of collective intelligence that emerges from the collaboration and competition of many individuals. More people working together can always get more ideas than one does. It appears in a wide variety of forms of consensus decision making in bacteria, animals, humans, and computer networks. Nevertheless, you have missed some drawbacks about group thinking in your blog. First, you may talk something unrelated to the topic and not concentrate on your group work. Second, it may have argues when we are cooperating with different people. It is because different people have different nature and thinking.

Anyway, I really appreciate your work and I am looking forward to see your next blog! Thanks.

I am the one who live in City Hall as well. I do appreciate your creative usage of materials in making tools. This can really save lots of space, especially I own 10 shoes in my room.

What I would like to mention is the way to deal with problem. Sometimes, we notify a problem, and then we find different ways to solve the problem. Some of solutions are our past experience, and some of them are our own creative thinking. That means, creative thinking can also be applied to problem solving. This can really help us to eliminate different kind of problems through the use of our creative mind.

Besides, I do agree with the term hidden memory in your entry. It shows that the process from individual to group is to generalize all the hidden memory and contemporary knowledge and experience. This can broaden the whole group direction and ways of thinking.

    Thanks for reading it.

  12. Dear Passingout
First of all, I need to show my appreciation on your article. You have used an extremely interesting and practical topic! As I stayed in hall last year, I can imagine how great the product you invented can help the residences. Moreover, for the hall product design, I have heard of using some bamboos to act as drying racks. It is very creative too and you may try this later.

The video you made is absolutely outstanding; nevertheless, the background music would be changed into other songs because it mismatched the topic.
It is a love song but your topic is innovation…
I would recommend you to use the song ‘I believe I can fly’ for the background music since it is about innovation, also it is very positive and melodious!

I agree with 2411rkgry about the meaning of group thinking, I believe you can use the word ‘’brain storm’’ instead of group thinking in your article Individual vs. Group .Here is a reference from wiki:
Groupthink is a type of thought exhibited by group members who try to minimize conflict and reach consensus without critically testing, analyzing, and evaluating ideas. Individual creativity, uniqueness, and independent thinking are lost in the pursuit of group cohesiveness, as are the advantages of reasonable balance in choice and thought that might normally be obtained by making decisions as a group. During groupthink, members of the group avoid promoting viewpoints outside the comfort zone of consensus thinking. A variety of motives for this may exist such as a desire to avoid being seen as foolish, or a desire to avoid embarrassing or angering other members of the group. Groupthink may cause groups to make hasty, irrational decisions, where individual doubts are set aside, for fear of upsetting the group’s balance. The term is frequently used pejoratively, with hindsight. [Source: anonymous, 2009, Groupthinking, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groupthink]

You can attach some innovation stories in your article to increase the readability and there are lots creative ideas in the ancient China. One of the famous one is 曹沖稱象, the story is talking about a genius child to measure the weight of an elephant without using the scales.
Here is the link of this story ^^ http://www.chiculture.net/1104/html/1104b03/1104b03.html.
Thanks for this wonderful article, keep it on.

  13. Your group did a good job. You provide a good idea for those who live in hall. Your product is very useful. Great! If I haven’t visited your blog, I don’t know the cardboard can be like this. I think it is really useful for the halls’ students. They can save their money and it is convenience for them. Great!

I agree that creativity has no limits and boundaries. But I know that some people are conservative. They cannot accept some creative idea. They think that it is embarrass.
Hong Kong people need to open their mind. I think the most effective way for creative more idea is that thinking more in our daily life.

I like your video. It is very interesting. However, I think you should better provide subtitles in your video since it can make it clear for viewers when they are watching the video.

    By the way, well done

  14. It is good to encounter that you have read the assigned readings (e.g. Using Comparisons to Express Ideas and Solve Problems on Mind Tools, http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newCT_93.htm). You may like to apply what you learnt from the academic integrity tutorial when you are quoting these materials.

You introduction on those creativity tools is just as clear as that of the assigned readings. In revision/extension, you may like to add some personal examples in doint this assignment to illustrate how did you make uses of this creativity tools. Say, how did Ngai Pok Keung use these tools before he made his suggestions to the group? How did others of Passingout evaluate his suggestions?

The core competency of your creativie use and project, if I interpret it correctly, is space saving. Can you make a comparision with a ordinary shoe box to show how many extra space does your creative use provide?

I am sure that you can do an as excellent job as this one in your revision/extension.

  15. Great invention! I never think of the cardboard and bottle can work like this. It is so impressive.

Although I am not living in student residence, I cannot experience much of your real situations. However, I do agree with you that “the needs is the mother of innovation”. Whenever you need improvement, you will think of innovation ways. For instance, teachers need to use the chalk and write on the blackboard. But now, we have powerpoints showing by projectors, even don’t need to write. It is because clean the blackboard is a waste of time. Also, different people would have different handwriting style. For efficient and consistency, powerpoint is a great innovation for presenting. Whenever you needs, you will look for ways to satisfy. It is great that you can make a good innovation that can meet your needs in your daily lifes.

By the way, I think you group can talk more about your thinking process of making these innovations. For example, how do you have these ideas? Any difficulties? How do you come across? As you know, a lot of obstacles would come across during the innovation.

    Thanks for your sharing.

  16. After doing two comments of the 3430 blogs, I am really tired. But I totally recover after reading your blog and your video. Your designs are so cool!!! There are few things that I really appreciate.

First, you guys really know the end-users so much. I was living in hall last semester, one of the biggest problems there was really the limited space. When I was living there, I also got lots of shoes to deal with. If I could use your invention those days, I think my room would be much tidier.

Also, your blog is very clear and easy to read. Especially the SCAMPER part, you use bullet point rather than long essay, I can read and absorb your content more easily. Also, you guys explain very clear in each part. I can understand well what your difficulties were during inventing, I know what was the most important aspect that you were considering. I can “experience” how the shoes box invented by reading your blog. It is really a “sharing”, not only an information injection. It is a “real” blog.

What is more, I don’t really know where the SCAMPER from, but I really like it so much!!! It is an easy guideline for the people who are not really innovative to follow when they need to innovate.

But there is one part that I don’t really understand which is the part of Creative Uses of Cigarettes in Anti-smoking Ads. You said “In the web page, you can see many anti-smoking Ads.” But I can’t find any links or pictures in your blog. So how are they so innovative or make you be creative?

    Nice blog, thanks.

  17. I think that the product is quite useful and creative!

Last year I live at City Hall, I think that it is so hard to find a place to place my shoes. It is a good idea for placing the shoes.

However, I think the outlook of the box is quite bad. You may add more decoration on the box. If not, it may only used in poor guy house and people would make this product instead of buying this product. Moreover, making this product is really trouble. Therefore, they will use your idea. So I suggest you guys may design the outlook of your product. For example, use color pen to draw some picture on the box.

Also, I think that use the wooden chopsticks have the same problem as the box. It is so ugly. It is not a product. No one will buy them. Also, if you put your shocks which you have wore, it is so dirty and to live in your room. Can your roommate accept them?

Your idea is quite good, but you should think more about how to let your product become a real marketable product.

I think that group thinking is better than individual thinking. When we think in a group, we can brainstormed more and developed one small point to the big one. Also, all of the group mate think and develop the ideas together can be understand the point deeply.

It is a good idea of your creation of that box, however I am afraid it cannot help you do solve the problems. Since it is a behavior, if you have no box but you want the room to be tidy and clean, you may put the things in the proper place. If you always put the things anywhere, although you have that box, since it is your habit, you will still put it anywhere and do not put inside the box.

I have some suggestion to your blog design, it is really difficult to read it and you can highlight some key words or use a point form since it is not looks interest now.

I lived in City hall in last semester and I do agree that the environment is small and crowded. Although we cannot change the area, we can use our creative thinking to change the practical area. “While we think out of norm, break the rules. The creativity comes. But if we are limited by the rules, by what we used to be, creativity never be us.” It is really true and that is the creativity.

I appreciate for your video and it is really a good job. Your group use picture for each steps to make it clear for audience to follow. The materials that used are some useless thing. The work is environmental-friendly and linked with our daily life. In the process of creativity and innovation, it also can promote the message of environmental-friendly. But I think the steps could be more details and the background music can use some relaxing music instead of the ‘love song’. When the readers follow your video to make it, they can listen to the music and feel relax.

‘While we think out of norm, break the rules. The creativity comes. But if we are limited by the rules, by what we used to be, creativity never be us.’ I do agree with it. Actually, I think that the students in Hong Kong are generally lack of creativity. They are used to follow the norms and seldom use own critical thinking to judge the things. So they are generally passive to ask questions and generate new ideas. But I do think that creativity can inspire our life.

Groupthink is a type of thought exhibited by group members who try to minimize conflict and reach consensus without critically testing, analyzing, and evaluating ideas.(from Wikipedia) I don’t denied that group think can stimili ideas and solve problems. But to generate creativity and innovation, I think brainstorming is better. Brainstorming is a group creativity technique designed to generate a large number of ideas. It can gather the ideas of a group of people and generate some new ideas. It is no limits or boundaries.

Moreover, the point of SCAMPER is concrete and useful. It gives us the general guidelines of making an existing product to a new one. But as I mentioned before, I think it only can be a reference list. We should not let any rules to restrict our creativity.

Anyway, good jobs and keep going =)

  20. It is appreciated that you guys provided a practical ideas to dealing with the problem of lacking of space which are the problem that Hong Kong peoples have to face. The metaphor of “the need is the mother of innovation.” is also impressive. Unfortunately, the appearance of your product seems not attractive enough for me to make use of it. I suggest you to put more effort on appearance improvement so that your creative ideas can be used and spread widely.

Friendly reminders, it’s a must for you guys to provide any citation that you refer to for the journal.
